Capitec Howick: Smart ID Walk-In Service KwaZulu-Natal Midlands

Capitec Howick is one of the most significant additions to the bank-based Smart ID network in KwaZulu-Natal. Serving the Midlands — Howick, Hilton, Nottingham Road, and surrounding areas — this branch brings Home Affairs-linked Smart ID services to a region where residents previously had no bank branch alternative to a full DHA office.

The service launched in March 2026 under the Digital Partnership model. No booking, no forms, no Home Affairs queue. Walk in and apply in approximately 5 minutes.

Open to all South Africans — no Capitec account required.

What You Can Do Here

Apply for a Smart ID — converting from a green ID book, renewing an existing Smart ID, or a first-time application for someone turning 16.

What You Cannot Do Here

  • Apply for a passport
  • Handle birth certificates, name changes, or other Home Affairs matters
  • Apply for a first-time Smart ID with no prior identity document — visit a full Home Affairs office

What to Bring

  • Your green ID book (if converting) or current Smart ID (if renewing)

No certified copies, no forms, no booking confirmation needed.

How It Works

Capitec’s self-service terminal handles the full application using a direct API connection to Home Affairs systems. No Home Affairs official is stationed at the branch.

At the terminal:

  1. Authenticate with biometrics
  2. Confirm your details from the population register
  3. Capture fingerprints and photo
  4. Pay the R140 fee
  5. Receive application confirmation — approximately 5 minutes total

Need a Passport in the Midlands?

Capitec does not offer passports yet. The nearest KZN passport options require an online booking via services.dha.gov.za:

  • FNB Cornubia, Durban
  • Nedbank Durban North
  • Standard Bank Kingsmead, Durban

Alternatively, Capitec Pietermaritzburg Central (400 Church Street) is the nearest walk-in Smart ID branch if Howick is not convenient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the only Smart ID bank branch serving the KZN Midlands? Yes, as of March 2026. Capitec Howick is the only bank branch in the Midlands offering Smart ID services. The next nearest options are Capitec Pietermaritzburg Central and the three Durban-based eHomeAffairs branches.

Can I apply for my child’s Smart ID here? Yes. Your child must be present for biometric capture. First-time applicants turning 16 apply for free. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone under 18.

What if I have never had any identity document? You cannot apply at a bank branch for a first-time ID with no existing document. Visit the Home Affairs office in Howick (cnr Howick Falls and Main Street) or Pietermaritzburg.

Can someone else collect my Smart ID? No. The applicant must collect in person. DHA requires identity verification at collection.

What if I have a query after submitting? Contact DHA directly on 0800 60 11 90. Capitec cannot access Home Affairs processing systems on your behalf.
