Capitec Smart ID Service: How It Works and How to Find a Branch (2026)

Capitec Smart ID Service: How It Works and What to Expect

Capitec offers walk-in Smart ID card applications at a growing number of its branches, in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). The service uses a self-service terminal, needs no appointment, and takes about five minutes, but it does require you to be a Capitec client. This page covers exactly what that means, what you actually need to bring, the fees, and why some applications stall.

In Summary

Capitec’s Smart ID service is for Smart ID replacements and green ID book conversions only, not first-time applications. You need a Capitec account to use it, since payment is processed through your account, though staff can open one for you on the spot if needed. You do not need to bring any documents for the application itself; biometrics handle identity verification. The total fee is R150 (R140 DHA fee plus R10 Capitec logistics fee), the process takes about five minutes at the terminal, and processing typically completes within 10 to 14 working days. As of 7 September 2026, Capitec had 242 participating branches out of 457 across all partner banks.

Do You Need a Capitec Account?

Yes. This is worth stating plainly because it is easy to miss: payment for your Smart ID application is processed through a Capitec bank account, so you need one to use this service. If you are not already a Capitec client, staff can open an account for you in branch during the same visit, and once it has a positive balance, you can continue with your Smart ID application.

This is different from a DHA live capture office, where no banking relationship of any kind is required. The trade-off is speed and convenience at the branch versus the account requirement.

What Do You Actually Need to Bring?

Nothing, for the application itself. Your identity is verified through biometrics captured at the terminal, checked against the Home Affairs population register. There is no paperwork to complete beforehand and no documents to hand over for the Smart ID process specifically.

The one exception: if you are also opening a Capitec account during the same visit, bring your green ID book or existing Smart ID so staff can verify your details for that separate process. That requirement belongs to the account-opening step, not the Smart ID application.

If you have lost your ID entirely: you will need to visit a full DHA office first to obtain a Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC) before applying for a Smart ID at a bank branch, since the terminal still needs something to verify your identity against.

How It Works: The Self-Service Terminal

Capitec’s implementation uses a self-service kiosk model. Unlike the older bank branch arrangement where a Home Affairs official sits inside the branch, Capitec’s system is operated entirely by the bank’s own staff and technology, connected to Home Affairs via a direct API.

The process at the terminal:

  1. Authenticate your identity using biometrics
  2. Confirm your personal details pulled from the Home Affairs population register
  3. Capture your fingerprints and photo
  4. Pay the fee via the terminal
  5. Receive confirmation of your application

The entire process takes approximately 5 minutes.

What You Can and Cannot Do at Capitec

You can: apply for a new Smart ID, convert your green ID book, and collect your finished card from the same branch once notified.

You cannot:

  • Apply for a first-time Smart ID if you have never held any identity document. You must visit a full DHA office for this.
  • Apply for a passport. Capitec does not currently offer this service; see our bank-based Smart ID and passport services guide for banks that do.
  • Process birth certificates, name changes, or any other Home Affairs matter.

Naturalised citizens and permanent residents from certain visa-exempt countries can now apply through this Phase 1 rollout. Everyone else must still use a DHA live capture office.

Why Some Applications Get Stuck: The Client-Error Problem

This is worth knowing before you apply. According to the Department of Home Affairs, roughly 38,500 Smart ID applications nationally have exceeded the standard turnaround time, and the department has attributed this specifically to client error, cases where someone started an application online but never followed up with an in-person office visit to complete it.

What this means practically: if you began any part of your Smart ID process online (through eHomeAffairs or a related portal) before visiting Capitec, make sure that step was actually finalised, not just started. Starting online and then applying fresh at a bank terminal without closing out the original online application appears to be a common way applications end up stuck in limbo.

If your application has passed 14 working days with no update, call the DHA Contact Centre on 0800 60 11 90 and ask specifically whether there is an incomplete or duplicate application linked to your ID number, rather than only asking for a general status check.

Fees

Smart ID (standard)R150 (R140 DHA fee plus R10 Capitec logistics fee)
Smart ID, first-time applicant turning 16R10 Capitec fee only

Capitec applies its R10 logistics fee to every application processed through its terminals, including cases where DHA itself waives its own R140 fee.

How Capitec Compares to Other Banks Offering This Service

If your nearest Capitec branch does not yet offer the service, it is worth knowing what else is available. As of early September 2026:

BankBranches liveStated target
Capitec242Leading rollout, part of medium-term 1,000-branch goal across all banks
Standard Bank118Not separately stated
FNB20240 branches by December 2026
Absa15Approximately 75 branches by end of 2026

Across all participating banks, 457 branches currently offer Smart ID services, against a Department of Home Affairs target of 750 branches by the end of 2026, and 1,000 over the medium term. Capitec’s 242 branches represent roughly 28% of its total 860-branch network, so most Capitec branches do not yet offer this service, and coverage varies significantly by province.

Provincial Rollout Snapshot (as of 7 September 2026)

This is a dated snapshot, not a live count, since branch numbers change frequently. Use this to understand relative coverage by region rather than to confirm a specific branch.

If you are in North West or the Northern Cape, coverage is still limited, and checking the DHA partner branch locator directly before travelling is worth the extra step.

The Bigger Picture: Where This Is Heading

The bank-branch Smart ID programme is a stepping stone toward a larger plan the Department of Home Affairs has called “Home Affairs @ Home.” Beyond the current Smart ID replacement service, stated future plans include expanding to passport applications and other key documents, enabling courier delivery of completed documents to cut collection trips entirely, and eventually integrating the service directly into banking apps rather than requiring a branch visit at all.

None of this is available yet, and no confirmed date has been set for any of these expansions. Treat this as direction of travel rather than a current feature.

How to Find Your Nearest Participating Branch

Capitec updates its list of participating branches frequently as the rollout continues. Rather than publish a branch list here that will be outdated within weeks, use one of these current sources:

After Your Application: Checking Status

Processing typically takes 10 to 14 working days. The SMS status check line to 32551 has been discontinued after DHA confirmed it was being exploited by cybercriminals for phishing.

Instead:

  • Automated updates: Home Affairs sends automated SMS notifications at key stages, including when your card is ready for collection
  • DHA Contact Centre: call 0800 60 11 90 for a direct status read
  • Capitec’s own channel: check for a separate notification through Capitec’s own app or SMS system, since bank-branch applications may trigger the bank’s own alerts alongside DHA’s

Return to the same branch to collect, and be ready to verify your identity again at collection.

What You Cannot Do

  • You cannot use this service without a Capitec account, though one can be opened for you on the spot.
  • You cannot apply for a first-time Smart ID here if you have never held any prior identity document.
  • You cannot get a passport through Capitec’s current service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Capitec account to apply for a Smart ID at Capitec? Yes. Payment is processed through a Capitec account, so you need one. If you don’t already have one, staff can open one for you during the same branch visit.

What documents do I need to bring for my Smart ID application at Capitec? None, for the application itself. Biometrics verify your identity. You only need to bring your green ID book if you are also opening a Capitec account during the same visit.

How many Capitec branches currently offer Smart ID services? As of 7 September 2026, 242 branches, out of 860 Capitec branches nationally. This number changes frequently as the rollout continues; check the DHA partner branch locator or contact Capitec directly for the current count.

Can I apply at any Capitec branch, or only participating ones? Only branches upgraded with the self-service terminal offer this service. Confirm with Capitec or the DHA branch locator before travelling.

I am not a Capitec customer and don’t want to open an account. Can I still apply here? No. This service requires a Capitec account for payment processing. If you would rather not open one, use a DHA live capture office or check whether another participating bank suits you better.

Why is my Smart ID application taking longer than expected? The Department of Home Affairs has attributed a significant share of delayed applications to client error, specifically people starting an application online and never completing it in person. If you started any part of your process online before visiting a branch, confirm that step was properly finalised.

Can I apply for my child’s Smart ID at Capitec? Your child must be present for biometric capture. If your child is applying for their first-ever Smart ID at age 16, the DHA fee is waived, though Capitec’s R10 logistics fee still applies. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone under 18.

What if the terminal is out of order? Check with branch staff on the day. If unavailable, you will need to visit a different participating branch or a full DHA office.

Does Capitec offer passport applications? Not currently. See our guide to which banks offer passport services for current alternatives.

How do I check my Smart ID status after applying at Capitec? The SMS status line has been discontinued. Wait for the automated DHA notification, check for a separate alert from Capitec, or call the DHA Contact Centre on 0800 60 11 90.
