Capitec Howick: Smart ID Walk-In Service KwaZulu-Natal Midlands

Capitec Howick is one of the most significant additions to the bank-based Smart ID network in KwaZulu-Natal. Serving the Midlands, including Howick, Hilton, Nottingham Road, and surrounding areas, this branch brings Home Affairs-linked Smart ID services to a region where residents previously had no bank branch alternative to a full DHA office.

The service launched in March 2026 under the Digital Partnership model. No booking, no forms, no Home Affairs queue. Walk in and apply in approximately 5 minutes.

Open to all South Africans. No Capitec account required.

In summary: Capitec Howick offers walk-in Smart ID applications, no appointment needed, in about 5 minutes. The fee is R140, free for first-time applicants turning 16 and citizens 60 and older. Passports aren’t available here. The old SMS status check to 32552 has been discontinued, so track your application through the automated updates Home Affairs sends directly, plus any separate notification Capitec’s own app may send.

What You Can Do Here

Apply for a Smart ID: converting from a green ID book, renewing an existing Smart ID, or a first-time application for someone turning 16.

What You Cannot Do Here

  • Apply for a passport
  • Handle birth certificates, name changes, or other Home Affairs matters
  • Apply for a first-time Smart ID with no prior identity document. Visit a full Home Affairs office instead

What to Bring

  • Your green ID book (if converting) or current Smart ID (if renewing)
  • No certified copies, no forms, no booking confirmation needed

How It Works

Capitec’s self-service terminal handles the full application using a direct API connection to Home Affairs systems. No Home Affairs official is stationed at the branch.

At the terminal:

  1. Authenticate with biometrics
  2. Confirm your details from the population register
  3. Capture fingerprints and photo
  4. Pay the R140 fee
  5. Receive application confirmation. Approximately 5 minutes total

After Your Application: Two Separate Notification Channels

Update, August 2026: The manual SMS status check to 32552 has been discontinued. DHA confirmed to MyBroadband that the short code was shut down after cybercriminals and fraudsters exploited it for phishing. There is no working number to check your status manually anymore.

Instead, two separate systems may notify you, and they don’t run in sync:

1. Home Affairs’ own automated SMS. DHA sends its own notification directly to you as your application moves through its system, typically culminating in a ready-for-collection message within 10 to 14 working days. This comes from DHA regardless of where you applied.

2. Capitec’s own notification. Because you applied at a bank branch, Capitec’s own systems may also send you a separate update through its app, SMS, or other channel. This is Capitec’s own confirmation process, independent of whatever DHA’s system is doing on its end.

You may get one, both, or occasionally neither if something goes wrong on one side. If you haven’t heard anything through either channel after the standard 10 to 14 working days:

  • Call the DHA Contact Centre on 0800 60 11 90 for a direct status read from DHA’s own system
  • Check the Capitec app separately in case its notification didn’t reach you but DHA’s processing has still completed

Need a Passport in the Midlands?

Capitec does not offer passports yet. The nearest KZN passport options require an online booking via services.dha.gov.za:

  • FNB Cornubia, Durban
  • Nedbank Durban North
  • Standard Bank Kingsmead, Durban

Alternatively, Capitec Pietermaritzburg Central (400 Church Street) is the nearest walk-in Smart ID branch if Howick is not convenient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the only Smart ID bank branch serving the KZN Midlands? As of March 2026, Capitec Howick was the only bank branch in the Midlands offering Smart ID services. The bank-based network has expanded rapidly since then, so check the official DHA partner branch locator for any newer additions closer to you.

Can I apply for my child’s Smart ID here? Yes. Your child must be present for biometric capture. First-time applicants turning 16 apply for free. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone under 18.

What if I have never had any identity document? You cannot apply at a bank branch for a first-time ID with no existing document. Visit the Home Affairs office in Howick (corner of Howick Falls and Main Street) or Pietermaritzburg.

Can someone else collect my Smart ID? No. The applicant must collect in person. DHA requires identity verification at collection.

Can I still check my status by SMS to 32552? No. That number has been discontinued after DHA confirmed it was exploited for phishing. Use the automated notification, check Capitec’s own app for an update, or call the DHA Contact Centre on 0800 60 11 90.

What if I have a query after submitting? Contact DHA directly on 0800 60 11 90. Capitec cannot access Home Affairs processing systems on your behalf.
