Capitec Smart ID Service 2026: All Branches, How It Works, and What to Expect

Capitec launched Smart ID card services at its first 7 branches on 9 March 2026, adding a further 6 on 13 March 2026 — bringing its total to 13 branches nationwide as of mid-March 2026. The service operates under the Department of Home Affairs’ new Digital Partnership model, which means no appointment, no paper forms, and no Home Affairs official required at the branch.

You walk in, use a self-service terminal to capture your biometrics and pay, and you are done in about 5 minutes. Your Smart ID is then processed by Home Affairs and sent back to the branch for collection.

This is a different experience from the older eHomeAffairs model that requires an online booking days or weeks in advance.

What You Can Do at Capitec

Smart ID card — apply for a new Smart ID or convert your green ID book. The fee is R140. Free for applicants turning 16 for the first time and for citizens aged 60 and older.

Collection — collect your Smart ID from the same branch where you submitted your application once you receive the SMS notification from Home Affairs.

What You Cannot Do at Capitec

  • Apply for a passport (not available yet — coming in a later phase)
  • Process birth certificates, name changes, or any other Home Affairs matter
  • Apply for a first-time Smart ID if you have never held any identity document (you must visit a full Home Affairs office)

How It Works — The Self-Service Terminal

Capitec’s implementation uses a self-service kiosk model. Unlike the older bank branch model where a Home Affairs official sits inside the branch, Capitec’s system is operated entirely by the bank’s own staff and technology, connected to Home Affairs via a direct API.

The process at the terminal:

  1. Authenticate your identity using biometrics
  2. Confirm your personal details pulled from the Home Affairs population register
  3. Capture your fingerprints and photo
  4. Pay the R140 fee via the terminal
  5. Receive confirmation of your application

The entire process takes approximately 5 minutes. No paper. No forms to fill in beforehand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply at any Capitec branch or only the listed ones? Only the branches listed above are currently live. Not all Capitec branches offer Smart ID services. The service is being rolled out in phases.

I am not a Capitec customer. Can I still apply? Yes. Capitec’s Smart ID service is open to all South Africans. You do not need a Capitec account.

Can I apply for my child’s Smart ID at Capitec? Your child must be present for biometric capture. If your child is applying for their first-ever Smart ID at age 16, they qualify for the free application. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone under 18.

What if the terminal is out of order? Check with Capitec branch staff on the day. If the terminal is unavailable, you will need to visit a different participating branch or a full Home Affairs office.

Does Capitec do green ID book applications? No. Green ID books are no longer issued by Home Affairs. The Smart ID card is the current standard identity document.

What if I have a query about my application after submitting? Contact the DHA Contact Centre on 0800 60 11 90. Capitec staff cannot access Home Affairs processing systems on your behalf.
