What Is a Smart ID Card?

A Smart ID card is South Africa’s official national identity document, issued by the Department of Home Affairs to citizens and eligible permanent residents aged 16 and older.

It replaces the old green bar-coded ID book. The Smart ID is a credit card-sized document containing your name, date of birth, ID number, photograph, fingerprints, and a microchip storing your biometric data. It is printed in English only.

The green ID book is 500% more vulnerable to identity fraud than the Smart ID, according to the Department of Home Affairs. The DHA issued a record 4,002,964 Smart ID cards in 2025 — a 17% increase on 2024.

Who Can Apply?

You can apply for a Smart ID card if you are a South African citizen or eligible permanent resident aged 16 or older.

Eligible applicants include:

  • South African citizens by birth applying for their first ID
  • Citizens replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged green ID book or Smart ID
  • Citizens updating personal details such as a name change after marriage or divorce
  • Naturalised citizens — eligible since 12 May 2025
  • Permanent residents from visa-exempt countries — eligible since 12 May 2025

Note for permanent residents and naturalised citizens: You cannot use the eHomeAffairs online portal. You must apply in person at a DHA live capture office with your naturalisation or permanent residence certificate and a certified copy.

How To Apply for a Smart ID Card

Option 1 — Online via eHomeAffairs (Recommended)

Citizens born in South Africa should apply via the eHomeAffairs portal at ehome.dha.gov.za.

  1. Go to ehome.dha.gov.za and register using your ID number
  2. Verify your phone number with the one-time PIN sent to your cellphone
  3. Log in and complete the Smart ID application form
  4. Upload scans of your required documents
  5. Pay R140 via EFT or bank deposit to the DHA account
  6. Book a biometric appointment at a DHA office or participating bank branch
  7. Attend your appointment — your photo and fingerprints are captured digitally. No physical photos needed.
  8. Wait for your SMS notification that your card is ready for collection at the same branch

Option 2 — At a Participating Bank Branch

Smart ID applications are available at FNB, Capitec, Standard Bank, Absa, and African Bank branches.

FNB and Capitec allow you to begin the application through their banking apps before your branch visit. Bank branches typically have shorter queues than DHA offices and operate on appointment systems.
