Your Complete Guide to South African Marriage Certificates

The Department of Home Affairs issues two types of South African marriage certificate: the abridged certificate and the unabridged certificate. Both are issued under the Births, Marriages and Deaths Registration Act and are drawn from the National Population Register (NPR).

This hub covers every aspect of getting, replacing, correcting, and using a South African marriage certificate — whether you are applying in South Africa or from abroad.

The Two Types of Marriage Certificate

Abridged marriage certificate The standard short-form certificate issued automatically after your marriage is registered. Contains both spouses’ names, the date of marriage, and the registration number. Sufficient for most domestic purposes in South Africa — insurance, banking, name change applications, SARS, and employer records.

Unabridged marriage certificate The full certificate showing both spouses’ complete personal details including ID numbers, nationalities, places and dates of birth, parents’ names, and previous marital status. Required for immigration applications, foreign visa applications, emigration, registering your marriage abroad, and dual citizenship applications.

Important: Unabridged marriage certificates issued by DHA no longer have the word “UNABRIDGED” printed on them. The document simply says “MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE” but includes the additional detail that identifies it as the full version. If a foreign institution asks whether you have the full or short version, the presence of both parents’ details and nationalities confirms it is unabridged.

How to Check Your Marital Status

Before applying for any certificate, confirm your marital status is correctly recorded. SMS the letter M followed by your ID number to 32551 (example: M 5001010050080). DHA will reply with your current recorded marital status and date of marriage.

This is free and takes seconds. It is the most reliable way to confirm DHA has your correct status before spending time and money on a certificate application.

Applying for a Marriage Certificate

All marriage certificate applications — whether abridged or unabridged — use Form DHA-130. The form is available at any DHA branch or downloadable from dha.gov.za.

Inside South Africa: Submit at any DHA branch. The abridged certificate can sometimes be issued the same day if records are immediately accessible. The unabridged certificate takes 6 to 8 weeks on average.

Outside South Africa: Submit at your nearest South African embassy or consulate. Processing is forwarded to Pretoria monthly. Allow a minimum of 6 months — the UK High Commission advises applicants to allow 12 months or longer.

Getting an Unabridged Marriage Certificate

The unabridged process is the same form (DHA-130) but takes significantly longer than the abridged. DHA must locate the original marriage register — the DHA-30 (for marriages post-2010) or BI-30 (pre-2010) — to issue the full certificate. If the original register cannot be located, the application is delayed or referred for investigation.

If Your Marriage Was Not Registered

If your marriage officer did not submit the marriage register to DHA, your marriage may not appear in the NPR. This is more common than most people realise — particularly for church marriages conducted in rural areas, or for marriages that took place many years ago.

Confirm your status first using the SMS service above. If your marriage is not showing, there is a specific process for tracing the original register and having the marriage registered retrospectively.

If Your Certificate Has Wrong Information

Errors on marriage certificates — misspelled names, incorrect dates of birth, wrong ID numbers — are common, particularly for older registrations. These errors must be corrected at DHA before the certificate can be used for immigration or legal purposes.

If Your Certificate Is Taking Too Long

The unabridged marriage certificate is one of DHA’s most delayed civic documents. Applicants routinely wait 3 to 12 months. Applications submitted at South African missions abroad can take longer.

Registering a Foreign Marriage in South Africa

If you married outside South Africa, South African law automatically recognises the marriage — but your DHA records will not reflect your updated marital status until you notify DHA. There is no fee for this update. Once done, you can apply for a new ID and change your surname if applicable.

Apostille for Overseas Use

An unabridged marriage certificate used outside South Africa typically requires an apostille — a formal authentication stamp applied by the High Court. This confirms the document is genuine for use in countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention.
