TymeBank and Home Affairs: Smart ID & Passport Services
TymeBank is part of the Department of Home Affairs expanded digital partnership for Smart ID and passport applications — but its services under this partnership are not yet live. Here is what is confirmed, what is coming, and what TymeBank customers should do in the meantime.
Is TymeBank Currently Offering Smart ID or Passport Applications?
No. TymeBank joined the DHA digital partnership in September 2025, but has not yet launched Smart ID or passport application services under that agreement.
TymeBank has confirmed it will participate in the second phase of the DHA rollout rather than the first phase currently being launched by banks like Capitec and Standard Bank.
Why Is TymeBank Not Part of Phase 1?
The first phase of the DHA bank partnership requires trained bank staff to assist customers in person — capturing biometric information and verifying identity at a physical branch.
TymeBank operates primarily through self-service kiosks at retail locations rather than traditional branches with professional staff. This model is not compatible with the phase 1 requirements, which is why TymeBank will join in phase 2.
What Is Phase 2?
Phase 2 of the DHA bank partnership is expected to enable Smart ID and passport applications through banking apps, with the option for documents to be delivered to your door.
This phase will be better suited to TymeBank’s model. TymeBank has confirmed it is engaging with Home Affairs and its technical partners to prepare for this rollout.
TymeBank is also in the process of rolling out dedicated consumer hubs in shopping malls across South Africa. These hubs will offer more in-person support than the current kiosk model and are expected to play a role in how TymeBank delivers DHA services when they go live.
When Will TymeBank’s Smart ID Services Be Available?
No confirmed date has been announced. TymeBank has said further updates will be shared once there is confirmed information to provide.
Check back on this page for updates as the rollout progresses.
What Can TymeBank Customers Do Right Now?
You do not need to bank with a specific institution to use most bank Smart ID and passport services. Several banks participating in the DHA partnership offer the service to all South Africans, not just their own customers.
Capitec has confirmed its Smart ID and passport service is open to all South Africans regardless of which bank they use. This is the most accessible option for TymeBank customers who need to apply now.

Frequently Asked Questions
I am a TymeBank customer — where can I apply for my Smart ID right now? Your nearest Capitec branch is currently your best bank option — their service is open to all South Africans, not just Capitec customers. Alternatively, visit any DHA branch directly.
Will TymeBank deliver Smart IDs to my door? Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has confirmed that doorstep delivery of Smart IDs and passports is planned for the app-based phase 2 rollout. TymeBank’s participation in phase 2 means this could eventually be available to TymeBank customers via the app.
Does TymeBank’s kiosk work for Smart ID applications? Not currently. The kiosks at Boxer and TFG stores do not support Smart ID or passport applications under the current phase 1 framework.
Is TymeBank a reliable bank for other DHA-related admin? TymeBank is a fully registered South African bank. For updating banking details after a name change or ID update, TymeBank operates the same as any other bank — visit a kiosk or use the app.
