Standard Bank Kingsmead Home Affairs: Smart ID & Passport Services in Durban

How To Use The Home Affairs Office At Standard Bank Kingsmead

Standard Bank Kingsmead is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s longest-running bank-based Home Affairs service points. Located in central Durban, it has been processing Smart ID and passport applications since February 2020 — making it one of the more established alternatives to visiting a DHA office in the province.

If you are in the greater Durban area and want to avoid a trip to a Home Affairs office, this branch is your most accessible option.

What You Can Do Here

Standard Bank Kingsmead handles two Home Affairs services:

Smart ID card — apply for a new Smart ID or renew an existing one. This includes converting from a green ID book to a Smart ID card. The fee is R140.

Passport — apply for a new South African passport or renew an expired one. The fee is R600.

Both services cover the full process: biometric capture (photo and fingerprints) at your appointment, and collection from the same branch once your document is ready.

What You Cannot Do Here

This branch handles Smart ID and passport services only. You cannot:

  • Apply for a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or death certificate
  • Process a name change
  • Handle immigration or visa matters
  • Apply for a green ID book (these are no longer issued — Smart ID is the replacement)
  • Apply for a Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC)

For any of the above, you need a full Home Affairs office. The nearest is Home Affairs Durban.

Is This a Walk-In Branch?

No. Standard Bank Kingsmead operates on the original eHomeAffairs model, which requires you to complete your application online and book an appointment before visiting.

You cannot walk in without a confirmed booking. If you arrive without an appointment, you will be turned away.

Standard Bank has launched newer Digital Partnership branches (Rosebank, Maponya Mall, Westgate, Parow) that operate as walk-in branches under a different model. Kingsmead is not one of these. If you need a walk-in option, check the Standard Bank Home Affairs page for the current Digital Partnership branch list.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Step 1 — Apply online

Go to ehome.dha.gov.za and create an account or log in. Complete the online application form for your Smart ID or passport. Have your green ID book or existing Smart ID nearby — you will need your ID number.

Step 2 — Pay online

Pay the application fee through the eHomeAffairs portal or via Standard Bank’s internet banking. Select Pay and Transfer > Pay My Bills > Billing Beneficiaries > Dept of Home Affairs. Keep your payment reference number.

Step 3 — Book your appointment

Once payment is confirmed, the system unlocks appointment slots. Select Standard Bank Kingsmead as your preferred branch and choose a date and time. You will receive a booking confirmation — print it or save it to your phone.

Step 4 — Attend your appointment

Arrive at the branch at your booked time. A Home Affairs official stationed at the branch will capture your biometric data: fingerprints, photo, and signature. The visit takes approximately 15–20 minutes.

Step 5 — Wait for your SMS

Home Affairs will send an SMS to the number on your application when your Smart ID or passport is ready. This typically takes 10–14 working days. Do not go to collect before receiving the SMS.

Step 6 — Collect your document

Return to Standard Bank Kingsmead with your ID to collect your Smart ID or passport. Collection is at the same branch where you submitted your biometrics.

What to Bring

For Smart ID (renewal / green ID book conversion):

  • Your green ID book or current Smart ID
  • No additional documents required for standard renewals

For Smart ID (if you have lost your ID):

  • Completed Form DHA-9 (obtain from the eHomeAffairs portal)
  • Your booking confirmation

For passport:

  • Your current passport if renewing
  • If your passport was lost or stolen: SAPS affidavit + completed Form DHA-73

For all visits:

  • Your appointment booking confirmation (printed or on your phone)
  • Your payment reference number

Do not arrive with certified copies of documents — they are not required for Smart ID or passport applications through the bank system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a Standard Bank client? No. The Kingsmead branch uses the eHomeAffairs model, which is open to all South Africans regardless of where they bank. You do not need a Standard Bank account to use this service.

Can I apply for a first-time Smart ID here? Only if you already have a green ID book to convert. First-time applicants who have never had any identity document must visit a full Home Affairs office with a parent or guardian.

Can I book an appointment for someone else? The appointment must be in the name of the applicant. The applicant must be present for biometric capture — you cannot submit on someone else’s behalf.

What happens if I miss my appointment? You will need to rebook through the eHomeAffairs portal. Missed appointments are generally not penalised, but the fee you paid remains linked to your application.

How do I know when my Smart ID is ready? Home Affairs sends an SMS to the mobile number on your application. You can also check your application status by SMSing your ID number to 32552 or calling the DHA Contact Centre on 0800 60 11 90.

Can I collect someone else’s Smart ID? No. The applicant must collect their own Smart ID in person. This is a DHA policy requirement — collection requires identity verification.

What if the eHomeAffairs system has no appointment slots? This is a known issue. Slots at Kingsmead can fill up days in advance. Check the portal at different times of day — slots are sometimes released at off-peak hours. If you cannot secure an appointment, you can visit a full Home Affairs office or check if any Digital Partnership walk-in branches are accessible to you.
