All 49 Bank Branches Where You Can Get a Smart ID in South Africa (2026)

.

The number of bank branches offering Smart ID services in South Africa jumped from 32 to 49 in March 2026, following the official launch of the Department of Home Affairs’ expanded Digital Partnership programme with Capitec and Standard Bank.

This page lists every participating branch, what service model they use, whether you need to book in advance, and whether they offer passports.

Two Models — Know the Difference Before You Go

Not all branches work the same way. There are two distinct models operating side by side:

eHomeAffairs (original model — since 2016)

  • Online booking required via services.dha.gov.za
  • Home Affairs officials stationed inside the branch
  • Offers both Smart ID cards and passports
  • Open to all South Africans regardless of which bank they use
  • Supported by: Absa, FNB, Nedbank, Investec, Discovery Bank, and Standard Bank (9 pilot branches)

Digital Partnership (new model — launched March 2026)

  • No booking required — walk in during branch trading hours
  • Bank’s own staff process applications via API connection to Home Affairs systems
  • Currently offers Smart ID cards only (passports coming later)
  • 5–10 minutes per application
  • Supported by: Capitec (open to all) and Standard Bank new branches (currently Standard Bank clients only)
