Unabridged Marriage Certificate – A Guide

The unabridged marriage certificate is the full South African marriage certificate — the version required for immigration, emigration, foreign visa applications, and registering your marriage abroad. It is issued by the Department of Home Affairs and applied for using Form DHA-130.

It costs R75. Inside South Africa, it takes 6 to 8 weeks on average. From a South African mission abroad, allow 6 to 12 months.

Before You Apply — Check the Marriage Is Registered

SMS the letter M followed by your ID number to 32551. DHA will reply with your recorded marital status. If the reply shows “not married” or the wrong details, the marriage may not be in the National Population Register. Read Marriage Not Registered at Home Affairs before applying — submitting DHA-130 when no record exists will result in a failed application and wasted time.

What Makes the Unabridged Different

The unabridged certificate contains everything the abridged does, plus: both spouses’ ID numbers, dates of birth, nationalities, places of birth, parents’ full names, previous marital status, marriage type (in or out of community of property), and marriage officer details.

One thing that catches many applicants off guard: the unabridged certificate no longer has the word “UNABRIDGED” printed on it. DHA changed the format and the document simply says “MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE.” The presence of the additional details described above is what confirms it is the full version.

What You Need — The DHA-30 / BI-30 Marriage Register

This is the most important thing to understand about the unabridged process.

DHA issues the unabridged certificate by locating the original marriage register book — the DHA-30 (for marriages registered after 2010) or the BI-30 (for marriages registered before 2010). The marriage officer completes this register at the ceremony, and a copy is submitted to DHA. DHA holds the original register in its vault archive in Pretoria.

If DHA cannot locate the original register, the unabridged certificate cannot be issued. This is the single most common reason for delays and failed applications.

What you should bring to help DHA locate the register:

  • The original handwritten certificate (BI-27) issued by the marriage officer on the day — this contains the register number and the marriage officer’s details
  • The DHA-30 or BI-30 form signed on the day of the wedding (if you kept a copy)
  • The full name and registration number of the marriage officer

If you do not have any of these, DHA will attempt to trace the register using the date, location, and names of the parties. This works but takes longer.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Step 1 — Check your marital status SMS M + your ID number to 32551 to confirm the marriage is on record.

Step 2 — Complete Form DHA-130 Download Form DHA-130 from dha.gov.za. Complete in black ink, block letters. Tick “unabridged” in the certificate type section. Use both spouses’ names as recorded at the time of marriage.

Step 3 — Gather your documents Original ID (Smart ID or green ID book), certified copy of ID, and the DHA-30 or BI-27 from the day of the wedding if available.

Step 4 — Submit at a DHA branch Any DHA branch in South Africa. No appointment required for most branches. Pay the R75 fee and keep your receipt.

Step 5 — Wait and follow up Processing takes 6 to 8 weeks on average. If you have not received notification after 8 weeks, follow up using your receipt number. Contact the DHA Contact Centre on 0800 60 11 90.

Step 6 — Collect your certificate Return to the branch where you applied. Bring your receipt and ID.

Applying from Outside South Africa

Submit Form DHA-130 at your nearest South African embassy or consulate. Applications are forwarded to Pretoria monthly via diplomatic bag.

Processing times from missions abroad are significantly longer than domestic applications. The South African High Commission in the UK advises applicants to allow 12 months or longer. Plan well in advance if the certificate is needed for an immigration or visa deadline.

If you have a genuine emergency, contact the mission directly — some missions have escalation procedures for urgent applications tied to immigration deadlines.

Original South African ID or passportRequired
Certified copy of ID or passportRequired

Original BI-27 handwritten certificate from the dayHelpful — contains register reference
R75 fee paymentRequired

If DHA Cannot Find Your Marriage Register

This is more common than it should be, particularly for:

  • Marriages conducted before 2000
  • Church marriages in rural areas where the marriage officer may not have submitted the register promptly
  • Marriages where the marriage officer has since retired or died

If DHA cannot locate the original register:

  1. Request a written response from DHA confirming the search was conducted and the register could not be found
  2. Contact the church, magistrate’s office, or marriage officer to obtain any copies of the register they may hold
  3. Submit whatever supplementary evidence you have alongside a new application
  4. Consider contacting the DHA Marriage Section at head office in Pretoria directly — 012 406 4000

Some applicants ultimately need to approach an attorney who specialises in DHA matters to help trace and reconstruct the record.

Frequently Asked Questions

We married in 1985 — can we still get an unabridged certificate? Yes. There is no time limit. For marriages this old, DHA holds the original register in its vault archive. Providing the date, location, and names of both parties in full gives DHA the best chance of locating it. Expect the process to take longer than the standard 6 to 8 weeks.

My marriage officer passed away — does that affect the application? Only if no copy of the register was ever submitted to DHA. In most cases, the marriage officer would have submitted the register to DHA at the time of the marriage regardless of what happened afterward. The death of the marriage officer does not prevent the certificate being issued.

The unabridged certificate I received does not say “unabridged” anywhere — is it correct? Yes. DHA changed the certificate format. The full version no longer carries that label — it simply says “MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE” but contains both spouses’ full personal details. See Abridged vs Unabridged for a full explanation.

I applied 4 months ago and have heard nothing — what do I do? See Marriage Certificate Taking Too Long for the escalation process. Start with the DHA Contact Centre on 0800 60 11 90 using your receipt number.

Do I need the unabridged certificate apostilled for use in the UK, Australia, or Canada? Yes for most purposes. These countries are Hague Convention signatories. The apostille is a separate step applied by the High Court after you receive the certificate from DHA. See How to Apostille a South African Marriage Certificate.
