What You Can Do Here

Apply for a Smart ID card — whether you are converting from a green ID book, renewing an existing Smart ID, or applying as a first-time 16-year-old applicant.

What You Cannot Do Here

  • Apply for a passport — see KZN passport options below
  • Handle birth certificates, name changes, or any other Home Affairs matter
  • Apply for a first-time Smart ID if you have never held any identity document — visit a full Home Affairs office

What to Bring

  • Your green ID book (if converting) or your current Smart ID (if renewing)

That is all. No certified copies, no booking confirmation, no printed forms.

If you have lost your ID: You will need to visit a full Home Affairs office first to begin a replacement process before applying at a bank branch.

How It Works

Capitec uses a self-service terminal model. You do not interact with a Home Affairs official — Capitec’s own staff and technology handle the application via a direct API connection to Home Affairs systems.

At the terminal:

  1. Authenticate your identity using biometrics
  2. Confirm your personal details from the Home Affairs population register
  3. Capture your fingerprints and photo
  4. Pay the R140 fee at the terminal
  5. Receive confirmation — done in approximately 5 minutes

No additional fees charged by Capitec.

After Your Application

Home Affairs processes your Smart ID centrally and sends an SMS to the number captured during your application when it is ready. This typically takes 10–14 working days.

Return to Capitec Pietermaritzburg Central to collect. You will need to verify your identity again at collection.

To check your status before the SMS arrives, SMS your 13-digit ID number to 32552.
