How to apply at a walk-in branch
Who can use it: Standard Bank clients.
- Go to a walk-in branch during trading hours; no booking is needed
- Tell staff you want to apply for a Smart ID
- Staff capture your fingerprints and photo
- Pay the R140 fee at the branch
- Receive confirmation of your application
- Wait for your notification, usually 10 to 14 working days
- Collect at the same branch
Bring: your green ID book (if converting) or current Smart ID.
Green ID book holders: The book will stop being valid as ID on 31 March 2028, so converting to a Smart ID now avoids the queues. See our green ID book deadline guide.

- Complete your application on eHomeAffairs and note the payment reference
- In Standard Bank internet or app banking, go to Pay and Transfer, then Pay My Bills, then Dept of Home Affairs

Fees
| Service | Fee |
|---|---|
| Smart ID | R140 |

After you apply
You may be notified through two separate channels: Home Affairs sends its own automated SMS, and Standard Bank may send its own notification. They are not linked, so you may receive one, both or neither. The 32552 SMS status line has been discontinued. If you hear nothing after 14 working days, call 0800 60 11 90. See the Smart ID status check and passport status check.
Collect in person at the branch where you applied. Nobody else can collect for you.
What you cannot do at Standard Bank
- Apply for a passport at a walk-in branch
- Use a walk-in branch if you do not bank with Standard Bank
- Apply for birth certificates, marriage certificates or name changes
- Apply for a Temporary Identity Certificate
- Handle immigration or visa matters
- Apply for a first-time Smart ID if you have never held any identity document
- Check your status by SMS; the 32552 line is discontinued
Frequently asked questions
Can I collect my Smart ID at Standard Bank if I am not a client?
Yes, if you applied at one of Standard Bank’s eHomeAffairs branches, which are open to everyone. You collect at the same branch where you applied. The walk-in branches only take applications from Standard Bank clients, so a non-client would not have applied there in the first place.
Can I use a Standard Bank walk-in branch if I bank elsewhere?
Not yet. The walk-in branches serve Standard Bank clients only for now. Anyone can use Standard Bank’s eHomeAffairs branches with a booking.
How do I pay for my Home Affairs passport through Standard Bank?
Complete your application on eHomeAffairs, then pay the R600 (or R1,200 if your current passport is still valid for six months or more) through Standard Bank internet banking under Pay and Transfer, Pay My Bills, Dept of Home Affairs, and approve the payment in the app if asked. Then book your appointment on eHomeAffairs.
I need a passport, not just a Smart ID. Which branch should I use?
One of Standard Bank’s eHomeAffairs branches, with a booking. The walk-in branches do Smart IDs only for now.
I am not a Standard Bank client but I have an eHomeAffairs booking at a Standard Bank branch. Is it valid?
Yes. eHomeAffairs bookings are with Home Affairs, not the bank.
Does Standard Bank charge an extra fee?
No. You pay only the Home Affairs fee: R140 for a Smart ID and R600 or R1,200 for a passport.
How do I check if my Smart ID or passport is ready?
Home Affairs sends an automated SMS, and Standard Bank may send its own notification. The 32552 SMS status line has been discontinued, so call 0800 60 11 90 if you hear nothing after 14 working days.
Can someone else collect my Smart ID at Standard Bank?
No. You must collect in person at the branch where you applied.
Can I apply for my first Smart ID at Standard Bank?
If you have never held any identity document, apply at a full Home Affairs office.
