FNB Smart ID and Passport Application — Branch Guide and App Booking

Can I Get a Smart ID or Passport at FNB?

Yes. FNB has offered Smart ID and passport services in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs since 2015 — making it the longest-running bank partner in the programme.

Since the partnership began, FNB has issued over 570,000 Smart IDs and passports — 312,000 Smart IDs and 258,000 passports — across its participating branches. That is more than any other bank in South Africa.

In August 2025, FNB significantly expanded the programme: committing to 15 active branches immediately, expanding to 240 branches within a year, and launching Smart ID and passport services directly through the FNB Banking App — including the option to have your document delivered to your home address.

Both FNB customers and non-customers can use the service.

Two Ways To Apply at FNB

FNB offers two routes — the FNB Banking App (FNB customers only) and the eHomeAffairs website (anyone with a South African ID number).

Route 1 — FNB Banking App (FNB customers only)

The FNB app now allows customers to apply for Smart ID and passport reissuance (renewals and replacements) directly from the app without visiting the eHomeAffairs website first.

Through the app you can:

  • Start and complete your application
  • Pay the DHA fee through your FNB account
  • Choose delivery to your home address or collection at an FNB branch
  • Track your application status throughout the process

Home delivery via the FNB app is part of the DHA’s “Home Affairs @ Home” initiative. Confirm availability of this option at the time of application as the rollout is ongoing.

First-time Smart ID applicants must still visit a branch for biometric capture regardless of app usage, as fingerprints and a photo must be captured in person.

Route 2 — eHomeAffairs Website (anyone)

This route is available to all South Africans regardless of which bank they use.

  1. Go to ehome.dha.gov.za
  2. Register and create a profile with your personal details
  3. Complete your application form online and upload document copies
  4. Pay the fee through FNB Online Banking or the FNB App — payment cannot be made at the branch in cash or by card
  5. Select an FNB branch and book an appointment time slot
  6. Attend your appointment for biometric capture
  7. Wait for SMS notification and collect from the same branch

FNB Branch List

The following FNB branches were confirmed as active for Smart ID and passport services. The network is expanding rapidly — always verify current branches on ehome.dha.gov.za before booking, as new branches go live regularly.

Original 7 branches (active since the pilot):

BranchProvince
FNB LynnwoodGauteng
FNB Centurion Lifestyle CentreGauteng
FNB 4 Merchant Place (Sandton)Gauteng
FNB The Glen Shopping CentreGauteng
FNB GreenpointWestern Cape
FNB CornubiaKwaZulu-Natal
FNB BurgersfortLimpopo

Additional branches were added from August 2025 as part of the 15-branch immediate rollout, with more launching through 2026 as FNB expands toward 240 branches. The eHomeAffairs platform shows the full current list when you book an appointment.

FNB’s stated goal is to have representation across all nine provinces, with a focus on communities that currently have limited access to Home Affairs services.

What To Bring to Your FNB Branch Appointment

  • Your South African Smart ID card or green ID book — original (bring it for collection too)
  • Your existing passport if applying for a renewal
  • Your payment confirmation from the eHomeAffairs platform or FNB app
  • For a lost or stolen passport: a SAPS affidavit confirming the loss

At the branch your photograph and fingerprints are captured digitally. No physical passport photos are required.

For child passport applications at FNB: both parents and the child must be present. The child’s unabridged birth certificate is required. Confirm with your specific FNB branch that child passport services are available before booking.

Fees

DocumentDHA Fee
Smart ID cardR140
Passport (new or renewal)R600
Lost/stolen passport — with SAPS affidavit of non-negligenceR600

Payment is made online through the FNB app or FNB Online Banking before your branch appointment. No payment is accepted at the branch counter.

Always confirm current fees at ehome.dha.gov.za before applying — DHA fees are set by the Department of Home Affairs and are subject to change.

Processing Times and Collection

Processing takes 10 to 14 working days from your biometric appointment at the FNB branch.

You will receive an SMS notification when your Smart ID or passport is ready. If you applied for branch collection, collect from the same FNB branch where you submitted your biometrics. If you selected home delivery via the FNB app, delivery is coordinated through FNB.

Third-party collection is not permitted under DHA Circular No. 1 of 2022. You must collect in person.

Track your status at any time: SMS P + your 13-digit SA ID number to 32552, or check on the FNB app if you applied through it.

Non-FNB customers can still use the branch service by booking through ehome.dha.gov.za, but will need internet or mobile banking at Absa, Nedbank, Standard Bank, Investec, or Discovery Bank to complete the online payment step. If you bank only with Capitec, TymeBank, African Bank, or another bank not yet integrated with eHomeAffairs payments, you may need to open a secondary account at a supported bank to pay online.
